Securing the Future of Your Occupational Therapy Practice:
Lessons on Specialty and Board Certification and The Use of Evidence-Based Practice

Presented by: Christine Urish, PhD, OTR/L, BCMH, FAOTA

Christine is Professor of Occupational Therapy at St. Ambrose University where she has been an occupational therapy educator for 14 years. She is a member of the AOTA Commission on Continuing Competence and Professional Development. She has a BS and MS in occupational therapy from Western Michigan University and a PhD in Rehabilitation Counseling from the University of Iowa. Christine maintains a clinical practice with persons diagnosed with mental illness at the local community mental health center.

Course Objectives:
1. Identify the AOTA standards of continuing competence, and how these standards relate to individual professional development as an occupational therapy practitioner.

2. Understand what the AOTA Professional Development Tool (PDT) is as well as and how this tool can be accessed and used to monitor professional development.

3. Demonstrate an understanding of the importance in ongoing self examination and reflection as a method of examining professional development across the lifespan of a practitioner's career.

4. Possess knowledge of what AOTA board and specialty certification is, what it is not, how it can benefit practitioners, employers and consumers as well as the process of applying for board and specialty certification.

5. Be able to identify resources for clinical use and application of evidence based practice including CAT's (critically appraised topics), CAP's (critically appraised papers).

6. Therapists will be able to identify current issues in mental health as they relate to the practice of occupational therapy.
